A Tale of Two Cranes: Lessons Learned from 50 Years of the Endangered Species Act

September 2023

It’s been 50 years since the United States attempted a conservation revolution with the passing of the Endangered Species Act in 1973. Now, fifty years later, the Fish and Wildlife Service finds itself at a crossroads: some recovery efforts are succeeding, but too many are either failing or stuck in neutral, even after decades of work.

A Tale of Two Cranes will serve as a launching pad for better understanding the progress and pitfalls inherent in endangered species management, through 50 years of lessons learned since the landmark Endangered Species Act was enacted by the United States Congress in December 1973..

Anthill Economics: Animal Ecosystems and the Human Economy

Does modern economic theory violate the basic laws of nature and physics? That is the question that award-winning environmental and energy writer Nathanial Gronewold sets out to answer in Anthill Economics.
Drawing from the nascent field of biophysical economics, Anthill Economics puts forth a radical new way of thinking: as 21st-century citizens, the global economy truly is our human ecosystem. This clearly written book full of illuminating ecological analogies provides a more complete understanding of human commerce shaped by the rules of nature and laws of physics.

About me:

Welcome to my personal homepage. I’m a university conservation policy researcher, journalism instructor, communications consultant, editor, journalist, and book author with experience spanning some 20 years in academia, journalism, philanthropy, digital publishing, and public relations.

I co-founded the news website Public Parks as its Editor-in-Chief. Public Parks will be devoted to covering the science and policy behind the management and protection of the world's public lands and last remaining natural areas, as well as related events and developments. You can learn more at: https://publicparks.org/

Currently, I’m a faculty member at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. Here, I teach journalism while advising student-led media operations, including the online and print news site Ka Leo O Hawai'i, independent radio station KTUH, Manoa Now, and the literary journal Hawai'i Review. Prior to this appointment, I served as Assistant Professor of International Relations and Environmental Studies at a private university in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. I’m also responsible for editing and producing newsletter content for the agricultural science nonprofit Grow Further.

My career has taken me from higher education to consulting, to international news reporting and editing, and now back to academia. I’ve authored two books and more than 3,000 news articles appearing in a variety of publications, including The Economist, The New York Times, Scientific American, and Science Magazine. I now have the privilege of educating the next generation of journalists on best practices, ethics, and legal considerations while warning them of the dangers of clickbait, pandering to audiences, rage porn, and reporting only to satisfy news consumers' addiction to confirmation bias.

In September 2023, I earned my Ph.D. in environmental science at Hokkaido University in Sapporo, Japan. I fully intend to continue my research into international environmental management and policy for academic curiosity and to better inform my work as Editor-in-Chief of Public Parks.

Many years ago, I worked in the University of Minnesota’s Office of Human Resources. Following that assignment, I worked at the University of British Columbia’s Centre for Japanese Research. I eventually took a role in Tokyo handling media relations for Japanese government agencies under the employ of a private contractor. I organized, recorded, and transcribed press briefings for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Prime Minister's Office. In addition, I co-drafted a speech for the nation’s foreign minister which she delivered to the Foreign Correspondents Club of Japan. I also regularly translated and edited Japanese government public reports and press releases.

Eventually, I was hired to cover news at the United Nations and the US Northeast for Nikkei, Japan's largest business and financial news organization. Following my four years of success at Nikkei and freelancing from the UN for The Economist and The Canadian Press, I was appointed New York City Bureau Chief for Environment & Energy Publishing LLC, a Washington, D.C.-based newswire and newsletter service. I covered the world for E&E for 12 years, establishing their New York City Bureau, Houston Bureau, then later that agency’s Asia-Pacific Bureau in Japan. I've reported from 10 countries on 5 continents. Some assignments required military escorts by UN peacekeepers, the US Army and Air Force, and the armed forces of Pakistan and Colombia.

I've won six journalism awards, including two National Press Club Awards and three UN Correspondents Association Prizes. I was also a finalist for the Livingston Award for Young Journalists. I hold an MS in Ecosystem Science from Texas A&M University, an MA in Asia Pacific Policy Studies from the University of British Columbia, and a BA in International Relations from the University of Minnesota.
